I live in a house with VERY temperamental pipes! Over the years we have had 3 floods in the basement and numerous backed-up sinks, showers and tubs — all due to clogs! That’s a lot of time, money and consternation! Needless to say clogged drains cause me a great deal of fear and loathing! That’s why whenever I run across a way to DEAL with them I am compelled to read about it, try it, and SHARE it! :-)
I was actually surprised to realize just how much sharing I’ve already done about clogged drains in the past on this blog. A quick search revealed FIVE home remedies I’ve already written about, and you can read the posts by clicking on the links.
Baking Soda and Vinegar
Empty one-half cup baking soda down the drain, followed by one-half cup white vinegar. Cover the drain and let mixture stand for a few minutes. Then pour a pot of boiling water down the drain. The baking soda and vinegar dissolve fatty acids, allowing the clog to wash down the drain.
Borax
Unclog drains with 1/2 cup of borax followed by 2 cups of boiling water. Let it sit for 15 minutes, then run your water for a few minutes to flush it out.
Dawn Dish Soap
A cup of Dawn detergent poured into a clogged toilet allowed to sit for 15 minutes and then followed with a bucket of hot water poured from waist height will clear out the toilet.
The Secret Plumber’s Trick
Fill a bucket with hot water. Pour the hot water down the toilet and the clog should be fixed in no time. The heat melts the fats in the “clog” & makes it all more flushable.
A Wet/Dry Vacuum
With the sink overflow hole blocked and a rag placed over the drain, press the end of your wet dry vacuum’s hose against the drain to form a tight seal. Then turn the vacuum on and let it do all the hard work for you!
All of these I have personally tried and have saved me countless plumber service calls! Not to mention they are inexpensive and non-toxic – unlike traditional drain cleaners that are EXTREMELY toxic!
Do you have any tips for dealing with clogged drains?
As several of these ideas involve dissolving fats, allow me to point out that we shouldn’t be pouring grease, oils or other fats down the drain. It’s illegal in many areas and not a good idea in general, for the very reasons demonstrated in our own homes – they create clogs farther down the line that city workers must spend time unclogging, costing us all money. County websites often have instructions on how to dispose of various wastes. Solid (animal) fat can be cooled and put in the trash, and liquid fat should go into its own container and into the trash – or alternately there are companies that make bio-fuels from used cooking oil who are glad to receive free donations (www.earth911.org). We save some to help light our Big Green Egg! And some people (like me) would tell you not to throw out animal fat, e.g., from bacon or meat roasts, but to render it and use it in recipes.

With a pair of forceps, he starts pulling the slimy greasy glob of hair up, and gag, gag again, splat, he threw up. Really? I have the stronger stomach, so not only did I have to finish cleaning the hair out of the drain, I had to work through the unpleasant stomach contents my husband left also.
Women, the weaker sex? I don’t think so!

It’s cheap so we don’t complain too much, but recently our bathroom sink drain had the distinct scent of death. I wanted the U pipe to be changed out, but my husband didn’t want to touch the death pipe, and didn’t want to spend money on it, since it’s not our death pipe to begin with. Need I mention again that this drain stank of death?!?! SO, being the clean freak wife that I am I decided to tackle this issue. Washing soda had worked in the past, but I went with the Borax since I never wanted to smell death again. Hit it with the Borax and boiling water, nothing, still deathish. OK, so I tried the baking soda and vinegar method, death prevailed, so I tried it again but this time with boiling vinegar, the score was me 0 to death pipe 3. I tried borax and vinegar, dawn, the mouth guard cleaning tablets, lye, ammonia, dissoluble aspirin (was getting desperate now) and nothing killed the death smell… SO, feeling guilty about all the stuff I was putting down the drain, I decided to go back to the washing soda. I ran water down the sink for a good length of time. I then poured the washing soda in, and to my despair it clogged, the powder made a little mound out of the drain. I freaked and said a few curse words and ran hot water, nothing. Hit it with the boiling water, nothing. Vinegar, a little fizzy but nothing. Boiling vinegar, nothing. I tentatively poked at it with a skewer, it was like cement. I cursed some more. ANYWAY, long story short, hubby came home and poked at it for 3 going on 4 hours before assuming defeat and removed the U pipe. It was pretty much cement, and yet the death smell was still oozing out of it. I went down to the local hardware shop and purchased a new pipe for $2.19 and a drain wig. When I got home, hubby was still chiseling out washing soda, and gagging from the black primordial death ooze that was getting everywhere. I replaced the pipe with the new piece and allowed my husband to bask in my wifely-rightness.
Long story short. Be careful what you put down you’re drain, prevention is always better. And when your drain smells like death, replace it.

Thanks so much for doing what you do! I get your emails and saved this one because our drains were all getting a little clogged. Our house was built in 1906 so we have a lot of problems as well with plumbing, basement flooding, etc… I love old homes, so it’s something I am willing to live with. Anyway, I did the baking soda and vinegar trick. It totally works!!! After digging out all of the nasty hair globs(somehow that has always been my job, even in childhood, in my houses), I followed up with some boiling water. It worked like a charm. Thanks again for always helping me out in home remedies. You’re awesome!

With four females in this house, I’m getting this little gadget! My husband has resorted to mesh wire under the shower drain. Our drain cover has rather wide slots. While this helps, it is still nasty. Last night we were watching a movie, and I said I smell pee. He did too. So a hunting we did go. Turns out it was the SHOWER! UGH! Must have been the hair/shampoo/soap concoction turned sour. Knew I had read something about baking soda on OGT and I just did all three drains upstairs. I used the soda and vinegar method. If that doesn’t cut it, I am moving on to the next one! Wish me success!

It raining during the night and the sewer backed up into the basement. We had 6 inches of standing water in our basement and had to trash mostly everything. During this time our toddler was playing in the house while we were cleaning. We were still potty training and she was wearing a pull-up from overnight. She somehow thought it would be fun to play in her soiled diaper. I had to hose my baby off in the backyard then taker her to my parents house for a bath while my husband waited for the emergency plumber. Our current home is also old and we have to plunge the bathtub drain every day. We just had baby #2 and my hair is falling out like crazy. I will definitely be checking into these!

No time to change, first tried a plunger, then tore apart the trap and ended snaking the line fromthe open trap getting the line clear just as everyone started arriving. Me in a white turtleneck covered in whatever drain scum must have been a sight
